When you think about New Year’s resolutions, losing weight and eating less junk food are almost always at the top of the list! While these are certainly good intentions, it’s not always easy to keep those goals throughout the New Year. The key is to have realistic expectations and to make a few simple changes to your lifestyle so that you can enjoy healthy living! Here are 4 great ways to maintain your healthy resolutions for the New Year:
1. Complete 30 Minutes of Daily Exercise
One of the best ways to maintain your healthy resolutions for the New Year is by completing 30 minutes of physical activity on a daily basis. If you have difficulty finding the time each day for a 30 minute exercise routine, you don’t have to do all 30 minutes of exercise at once. For example, you could spend 10 minutes of your lunch break going up and down the stairs of your office building or take your dog for an extended walk in the evening. These types of small changes in your lifestyle can make a huge difference for your health!
2. Always Eat Breakfast
If you have heard that breakfast is the most important part of your day, this is for a good reason! When you have breakfast in the morning, it immediately boosts your metabolism and helps you burn calories throughout the day. It also provides the energy necessary to get things done and helps you focus on your work or school activities. Many studies have shown that eating breakfast can lead to better weight control, lower levels of LDL cholesterol and lower chances of getting diabetes. Your choice of breakfast food is important too, so try to start the day with yogurt and fruit or whole grain cereal with low fat milk.
3. Avoid Sodas and Sweetened Drinks
Another way to maintain your healthy resolutions for the New Year is to avoid drinking sodas and sweetened drinks. These types of beverages can have tons of sugar and calories, which really add up when you have a few of these drinks per day! As an alternative, try to drink water as much as possible to keep your calorie intake to a minimum. There are also many healthy benefits to drinking water as it helps to maintain the balance of your bodily fluids, energizes your muscles, helps your kidneys and helps to maintain your normal bowel function.
4. Eat 5 Servings of Fruits and Vegetables Every Day
One of the most important changes that you should make in your diet is to eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables each day. Bring these healthy foods to work each day so that you can enjoy them as a snack rather than being tempted with the junk food in the vending machine. It can also be beneficial to purchase pre-cut fruits and veggies so that you can simply grab them anytime you are hungry. As a helpful tip, try to select a variety of fruits so that you don’t just have one large bag of the same type. Otherwise, you might get bored of the same fruit and be more tempted to go for chips, cookies and other snacks!
